In spite of E.M. Forster's novel, A Passage to India, being touted as the most commented upon book written in the 20th Century, it seems rather strange that critics have so far omitted, or rather, failed to connect the major events in the episode and the symbols used there in to the Indian myths and parables as seen in their literature. In the present paper, I use a simple anagram of the celestial syllable, AUM, to show how it is possible to unravel the mystery and muddle of the cave incident through the Hindu myth of Parvati and Shiva and connecting them to the experience of Mrs. Moore, one of the principal protagonists of the novel.
