The purposes of this three year research proposal include the preparation of mesoporous metal oxides (MgO, Na/MgO; V2O5) and composite materials of nanometal/mesoporous metal oxides (Pd?MgO; Pd/Na/MgO; Pd?Al-MgO; Pd/Na/Al-MgO) and nanometal/mesoporous molecular sieves (Pd/MCM-41&Pd/MCM-48). These materials are characterized with XRD, physisorption, SEM&TEM, TGA, chemisorption, FT-IR, CO2-TPD, H2-TPR and solid state NMR in order to obtain the structure, the surface area, the pore volume and pore size distribution, the particle shape and size, the basicity, the reducibility and the metal dispersion. The catalysts are utilized for reactions of aldol condensation, oxidation, and hydrogenation in order to synthesize industrial compounds. The catalytic results are correlated to catalyst properties. This proposal includes three parts: (1) the preparation of catalysts; (2) the characterization of these catalysts; (3) the catalytic application. The proposal of the first year is to prepare mesoporous MgO; Na/MgO and V2O5 with large surface area and high stability. These catalysts are characterized with various instruments to obtain their properties. The following reactions are investigated: (1) aldolization of acetophenone; (2) cross aldolization of benzaldehyde and acetone; (3) the oxidation of diphenylmethane. The proposal of the second year is to prepare composite materials of nano Pd/MCM-41 and Pd/MCM-48.The catalyst properties are characterized with appropriate techniques. The following reactions are studied: (1) the hydrogenation of cyclohexanone; (2) the hydrogenation of ethylpyruvate; (3) the hydrogenation of citral. The proposal of the third year is to prepare the dual functional composite materials such as nano Pd/mesoporous MgO; nano Pd/Na/mesoporuos MgO, nano Pd/Mg-Al mixed oxides and nano Pd/Na/Mg-Al mixed oxide. The catalyst properties are measured. The following reactions of aldolization and hydrogenation are performed: (1) n-butanal; (2) n- hexanal; (3) n-butanal and isobutanal.
