ABSTRACT This thesis design attempts to establish the dwellings as a community of the city and use the community as the starting point of the local cultural industry. Housing As for the space created by the architecture, housing is the one with the most intimate relationship with our life. The key feature of the city is mostly shaped by housing, which has already become the most important dwelling for modern people. In fact, the sociality that the housing can offer is hard for people to imagine. That is to say, housing is the place with certain power to form a community and to create a close relationship among the whole neighborhood, especially in the past. For example, the Hakka Yuan-Lou is the housing based on blood relationship. Unfortunately, the housing in Taiwan today is most built for goods with no strong neighborhood relationship. From the observation of the network community, it is possible to create a new housing form based on a new idea of "community". Industry With the working of the economy system, the "local cultural industry," which is not only the crystallization of local life, culture, and history, but also the principal base of the local economic industry, has already become the most important economic assets for local regeneration and development. For most European and American cities, the cultural industry is the essential asset to raise the amount of city consumption, to strengthen the living art of city, and to gather the consensus of the community. Local Cultural Industry This thesis design attempts to gather the dwellings as a community of the city and use the community as the starting point of the local cultural industry. The goal is to transform the original gold working industry of the Jewelry Street on ChungGong road in Taichung to a cultural creative industry. What’s more, the design wants to establish an intense combination of the gold industry community with the local production system and that with a sense of identity with the local. Since the design focuses on the gold industry community, the relationship between living, working, and commerce, is the key concern of this design.
