    Abstract: 本書檢視上海租界時期裡弄住宅的社會生產過程,並由此探討實質形式與貼附其上的社會意義之轉變。文中透過對上海都市空間營造的商品化過程裡集體營造行為所促成之住宅實質形式變遷、居住其間的使用者與發生於裡弄空間中的特定行為模式,來解析「裡弄」此一住宅類型如何在歷時性的城市營造過程中轉換使用者並被貼附不同的社會意義,並發展出不同的裡弄類型。本書歸納指出:裡弄住宅之形成與變遷是空間商品化的結果;現代基礎設施的設置邏輯合理化了裡弄形式的發生,也結構性地透過「越界築路」導向郊區的發展。國家中介的移動集體消費,降低了郊區居住的生活門檻,也經由其對郊區集居形式的干預,使衛生、舒適等概念得以與郊區、西式住宅、新式裡弄等意象間產生模糊的連結。對應著擁擠的內城區中式裡弄,透過中產階級對空間差異的認同消費,建構出城郊與內城區差異的人文地景。但城市同時是階級利益與價值衝突之場域;無力進入商品住宅市場的弱勢居民經由非正式部門營造自行解決居住消費,裡弄中的集居形式從而成為支配的菁英階層透過國家的中介制度化其利益的擷取之結果。宅地形式與生活風格是階級區辨下的空間文化形式,各類裡弄住宅實質形式上的差異循此成為租界社會分類在美學範疇上的展現。裡弄住宅因此不僅是城市居民居住需求的消費商品,也同時透過商品化為浮動的社會關係所構造;反之,新的社會關係也透過裡弄空間的差異中所生產。空間自此成為流動的社會意義的載體,也是空間中社會關係再生產的基地。本書經由對公共租界內特定裡弄住宅在不同的歷史階段不同的社會作用者所貼附的不同社會意義之解析,解析了空間實踐與都市社會構造間之歷史關係。
    The book examines the social production of the Shanghai Lilong from 1843 to 1943, and discuses the transformation of their physical forms and the social meanings attached. Through studies about the transformation of the built forms, the residents and the whole historical/social settings of specific dwelling units, the book analyzes not only how, synchronically, different types of Lilong transformed themselves under Shanghai』s urban expansion, but also why and how, diachronically, some Lilong was attached definite social meaning through respective social process. The book concluded: the emerging and transformation of the Shanghai Lilong was the outcome of space commodification. The installation of modern infrastructure accompanied with the logics of modern urban governance justified the forms of Lilong and had they sustained to be the prototype of modern urban housing of Shanghai. Through state』s intervention, the collective consumptions regarding moving and the zoning regulations as well, reduced the thresholds to live in suburbs. Consequently some imagines of the suburban settings, the foreign residence and new type of Lilong were obscurely corresponded with sanitary, convience, and amenity. In comparison to the overcrowding conditions of the existing Chinese Lilong within inner city, spatial representations made for social distinction of the urban elites and middle classes emerged and generated the diversities between inner city and the suburbs. City itself was either the battle field of class and political struggle. The poorest who excluded by the real estate housing market were forced to sustain their living through unauthorized additions and alterations to existing Lilong. The overcrowding conditions within inner city verified to be the outcomes of space commodification which could generate and institutionalize the benefits of the ruling class by state』s intervention. Lilong and the life styles within specific neighborhood assumed to be the spatial cultural form for social distinction. The diversities of Lilong and their settings could therefore be regarded as aesthetic aspects of cultural preference made for social regrouping. Accordingly the Shanghai Lilong witnessed to be not only the physical commodity made for residential purpose, but also the carriers constructed by floating social relationship. On the contrary, the emerging social classes and their social correspondence were also reproduced by the dwelling spaces. Lilong were demonstrated to be carriers for floating social meaning and either the bases for made for reproduction of specific social relationship. Through analysis about specific Lilongs and their social meaning endowed by different social actors in different historical periods, the book interpreted the historical corelation lay in between spatial practice and urban social formation.
