The purpose of the study was to compare the protein utilization (PU), energy utilization (EU) and metabolizable energy (ME) of domestic feather meal (DFM) and imported feather meal (IFM) in broilers, the age effects of broilers on these measurements were also determined. Sixty five-day-old male chicks with similar body weight were randomly allotted to 4 replicates of 3 treatments with 5 chicks each replicate. Birds were fed either basal diet contained 20% glucose or were fed experimental diets which glucose was completely replaced by two sources (domestic or imported) of feather meals. Birds were housed in electrically-heated and wirefloored metabolism cages. After a 5 to 9-day adjustment period, excreta were collected at ages of 10 to 13 day and 29 to 31 day, respectively. the PU, EU and ME of two feather meals in two ages of broilers were calculated. An in vitro pepsin digestion trial was also conducted to determine the protein digestibility of two feather meals. Results indicated that the age did not affect (P>0.05)the PU, EU and ME of two feather meals. However, IFM consistently had a higher (P<0.05) PU(37.4 vs 27.9%), EU(54.7 vs 38.6%) and ME(2797 vs 1889kcal/kg) than DFM had. The protein digestibility in IFM, measured by in vitro pepsin digestion trial, was also hiher(P<0.01; 34.4 vs 25.8%) than in DFM and the values wre very similar to the values found by metabolism trial. In summary, broiler could digest more protein and energy in imported than in domestic feather meal, however, their utilization was low in both sources of feather meals.
