Industrial activities in Changhua are mainly consisted of electroplate industry and metal surface treating. The drainage containing contaminated chemicals affect the coastal ecology. However, Changhua coastal area is an important feeding habitat for shorebirds. In my study, I analyze the samples to know the level of heavy metal bioaccumulation in organism and environment. In addition to, I want to understand the relationship of concentration of heavy metals in temporal and spatial variation between the breast feathers of Dunlins (cadmium, copper, chromium, nickel and lead) with environmental sediment (cadmium, copper and lead) at Changhua coastal area in winter to spring migration season. The differences of metal concentrations in the breast feathers of dunlins between sex, age and different molting stage were examined. Moreover, I tested the correlations between the weight and heavy metal concentrations were investigated in feathers of Dunlin. The results are provided some information in heavy metal concentration of organism and coastal environment. Firstly, Results showed mean concentrations of heavy metal of sediments (n=31) were listed in order: Cu(33.7±23.4 ug/g)> Pb(22.5±5.4 ug/g)> Cd(0.47±0.17 ug/g). The sediment concentrations of cadmium was significantly different among different sites. However, copper and lead concentrations were found no significant difference. Secondly, the mean concentrations of heavy metal of Dunlin feathers (n=77) were listed: Cu(211.1±136.3 ug/g)> Pb(67.2±51.4 ug/g)> Cr(22.7±33.4 ug/g)> Ni(8.7±9.5 ug/g)> Cd(5.4±5.7 ug/g). In all elements, there were no significant difference (P>0.05) of heavy metal concentration between male and female, and the concentration of Nickel in feathers was significantly different (P<0.05) between adult and juvenile. Copper and nickel concentrations in Dunlin feathers were significantly different (P<0.05) in different molting stage . Chromium, nickel and lead, there were found significant correlations (P<0.05) between concentration of feathers and body weight. Finally, the analysis of the concentrations in dunlin feathers and sediments, there was only good correlation of concentration in Pb at Heo-Pao estuary. It’s meant the results of my analysis can’t show the status of heavy metal pollution in intertidal habitat completely. I suggest to do more experimental designs to improve the correlations. |
