Abstract: Savvy strategies are needed for adopting codec standards to encode videos replayed on mobile handheld devices, which are key players in ubiquitous computing environments. Due to the complex computational needs of video decoding and the limited battery capacities of mobile handheld devices, energy efficiency of video applications on mobile handheld devices can not be overemphasized. The increasing number of codec standards makes it perplexing and difficult for users trying to choose the optimal video codes to play on handheld devices. In this paper, we investigate power consumption of videos encoded by various codec standards and try to find rules to encode optimal video codes on handheld devices from the energy efficiency point of view. Various experiments have been done to explore the effects of the choice of codec standards, file formats, and encoding parameters. ? 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
