Human cognition reflects the way how people interpret, organize and respond to the world they live in, our everyday language reflects the way we see our world and life experience, and the penetration of cultural factors as well. Human perceptions are in common and with stability in the physiological aspects, and the variability and differences in the cultural aspects. The language performance reflects how people see their perceptions, people’s viewpoints on the vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch and other sensory perceptions will change according to the impact from the changes of their society and living environments. Changes in point of view on sensory perceptions, in turn, will affect even how people view the nature, social aspects, and emotion and the expression of ideas as well. If the sense of intellectual perspective and methods has changed, through the language performance, the way we see the world will also be different. Based on the above-mentioned ground, we belief that“Great poets can speak to us because they use the modes of thought we all posses. Using the capacities we all share, poets can illuminate our experience, explore the consequences of our beliefs, challenge the ways we think, & critique our ideologies.”(Lakoff & Turner 1989) “Since cognition is to do with the mental processes involved in reading, and poetics concerns the craft of literature.”(Stockwell2002:1), this project attempts to take the Cognitive Poetic approach, cooperated with Chinese Phonological knowledge for middle Chinese, to explore the Chinese narrative poem of T’ang Dynasty(新樂府), through the rhythm and prosody stratum, the units-of-meaning stratum (lexical and metaphorical images) as well as the narrative frames of poems. This two year-project proposes a study on "Towards cognitive poetics on Chinese narrative Poetry ".We have accumulated a solid data base and methodology for poetic language (NSC89-2411-H-029-020 & NSC-92-2411-H-029-007), and for cognition of perceptions in Chinese idioms(NSC 93-2411-H-029-003/13, NSC 98-2410-H-029 -041 & NSC 100-2410-H-029 -042). It will be remodeled and optimized in this project tomeet the needs for poetic aspects. Bases on the global view over our optimized corpus, we will be able to carry out a cognitive poetics-based A GLOBAL METAPHORICAL READING, as proposed by Lakoff & Turner 1989 and the experimental patterns proposed by Chou 2003 as well, . All of this will contribute to establish the tentative analysis frame for Chinese cognitive poetics. |
