In any modern society, “justice” has often become an arena in which ideas and practices collide. For which we mean that, in the name of justice, all sorts of actions take place for various reasons or concerns. It has become a key part of social life: all kinds of moral controversies, emotional reactions, and conflict of interests resulting from pursuing justice. Interestingly, the phenomena and incidence of injustice do not abate despite people’s call for justice. All civic societies have continued to struggle daily in terms of the divide between justice and injustice as well as those structural causes of injustice. If we want to examine origins of injustice, we have to start from the dimensions of values, systems, and individual interests. Moreover, by focusing on concrete reality, we can grasp the production and reproduction of injustice far more clearly. In this proposed project, we will explore social origins of injustice in post-war Taiwan through both macro- and micro-level inquiry as well as historical and social analyses. In addition to theoretical formulations and discussions, our emphasis will be on empirical examinations of social origins of injustice during the historical and civilization processes of post-war Taiwan. Through theoretical refinement and empirical investigation, we hope to formulate a reflexive sociological explanation for origins of injustice. We aim to demonstrate that the so-called “miracles” do not exist in all facets of a current Taiwanese society. All the injustice accompanying Taiwan’s miracle—visible and invisible—should be revealed and analyzed.
