This study focuses on cultural image of city, and questions the phenomenon of current similar city image in the world. Based on local identification, it suggests that city development should be based on cultural context and characteristics. Hence, through exploring presentation of urban public environment and facility, this study attempts to find if design elements of form, color and material, upon characteristics and identification of regional culture, can convey city difference and cultural features to local residents and visitors. The research methods included field investigation, Evaluation Grid Method, and Quantitative Theory Type I. Data were collected and analyzed. In field investigation, the researcher collects samples and analyzes content. First, at the stage of field study, the researcher recorded the characteristics of environment of research field by taking pictures. The main purpose was to widely and completely control presentation forms and techniques to demonstrate regional cultural characteristics in research fields. From pictures in primary investigation, the research team screened the ones which showed the difference of environment as samples of Evaluation Grid Method at the second stage. By inquiry and comparison, this study recognized the subjects’ (street users’) abstract feelings toward samples, and explored the correlation with concrete presentation technique. According to interview result of Evaluation Grid Method, the researcher designed questionnaires, and conducted quantitative statistical analysis. Based on the analytical result, suggestions to design of public environment were proposed. According to the results, the subjects’ evaluation on urban space image of Taichung is classified below: (1) lack of cultural image; (2) modern design; (3) friendliness; (4) green and lively; (5) diversity, culture and art; (6) positive atmosphere of space. Based on “lack of cultural image”, the researcher identified the main factors and causes of cultural image shortage on the streets of modern cities. Regarding the rest five categories, they were the reference for future urban street planning. The planners can review the effect and importance of environmental factors on streets in different categories and evaluate atmosphere and feelings on the streets to design the space by proper elements. Keywords: image of city, image of culture, pedestrian space, Evaluation Grid Method, Quantitative Theory Type I
