In this study, we identify major problems in Taiwan’s Sexual Education from the aspect of legislation and its outcomes from the statistics, and proceed to search for a better alternative based on existing sexual education systems and a survey on Taiwanese college students’ perception of sexual education.
In order to learn from existing sexual education systems, there will also be a close examination of sexual education systems in other countries, which include the Netherlands, Spain and the U.S. We’ve found out that the European countries we looked at start their sex education at a very early stage, and the contents of their sex education are very broad and detailed. The statistics of these European countries indicate that their methods have proven a positive outcome. The U.S. also faces similar problems with problematic laws considering sexual education, and we’ve discovered they have an interesting alternative of improving their sexual education system, which is by running self-funded programs and collaborate with local schools.
In our survey, we designed four parts to better understand Taiwanese college students’ general experience and perception of sexual education. These four parts are their backgrounds, their experience with sexual education from first to twelfth grade, their level of acceptance of various sexual topics from first to twelfth grade, and finally, a little quiz to test our participants’ sexual knowledge. Out of the 207 participants of our survey, half of them are from the south, therefor our results will be more applicable in the south. From our results we have discovered that Taiwan’s sexual education is very insufficient during the six years of elementary education, for the contents mostly focus on body structures and secondary sexual characteristics. This is entirely opposite from what we have found in the European countries. Not to mention, our test results from part four directly echo the lacking of education in topics such as healthy relationship and partnership.
From this study, we found out the sexual education in Taiwan is insufficient and neglects certain sexual topics, which greatly affects the general sexual knowledge of Taiwanese. Taiwan could improve could greatly improve its sexual education system by emulating and modifying the methods of the countries mentioned above.
