Abstract:
This study is part of a series of research on current utilization of temporary elements in urban pedestrian spaces. In Taiwan temporary elements are seen everywhere in commercial pedestrian zones and those street objects are one of the approaches to vitalize a commercial space. Findings indicate no matter what the type may be users generally are not concerned about the ownership; they are more concerned about whether the purpose of their activities in a particular space can be accomplished. Thus, the value of those temporary elements depends on the activities their type and their equipment can offer. No matter what the type may be, it can be asserted that temporary elements transform the pedestrian space into a commercial one. Even though users and storeowners generally believe that temporary elements interfere with the pass-through traffic, they both also point out that if government agencies work with storeowners and establish an effective managerial mechanism, the presence of temporary elements can energize the shopping street and add fun to shopping activities.
