The construction of contemporary hospitals tends to focus on building and medical facilities and ignores the outdoor environment. In fact, the outdoor environment is also part of the hospital "medical facility." Many studies have shown that a natural environment or well-designed landscape may yield positive physiological and psychological benefits on users. Moreover, researchers in developed countries found that the healing landscape in or around a hospital can effectively support the patients as a supplemental and complementary treatment. The application of therapeutic landscape or healing garden on medical facility development has got more and more popular in the Western world but just started in China. This design project selected the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, Donghai District as a design site. The design concept and guidelines were developed based on the research literature and case studies regarding the therapeutic landscape and healing gardens. It also combined the flow of water through the whole site in accordance with the course of medical treatment for the patients and their families. This resulted in the creation of different healing spaces including “enlightenment,” “succeeding,” “transformation,” and “accomplishment.” A unique space was also provided specifically for the medical staff.
