AbstractThis thesis consists two parts. The first part introduces myself (the artist) by narrating my background and several turning points in my life, and then explains the motivation of creation and the motif, the choice of materials, and the forms of expression of my work. The second part introduces the developmental stages of my creative work by examining individual pieces. The interpretation of each painting explains how it presents the human-nature relationship to the viewers, and how it reveals the inner self reflection of the artist. Throughout the process of creation, I experienced firstly the Mother Nature, my inner self, and then the connection of nature and self, and finally I decided to reposition my art back in the society.Starting from introducing my (the artist’s) learning background and the beginning of my understanding of nature (especially plants), the first part of this thesis describes how I, through exploring and studying materials, intentionally integrated the diverse and inclusive, and/or even contradictory relationship between human and nature into the creation of images. Single pieces of painting are chosen to explain the motif I dealt with, while image strips reveal my attempt to connect different fields. Through these two types of painting, I intend to make clear the decision of taking part in the society, in spite of the necessity of placing myself in the consistent contradiction of arguing and compromising. In other words, my creative work serves not only as a form of advocacy and communication, but also as an expression of my inner reflection. There are five chapters in this thesis. The introduction gives an overview of my background and my connection with nature. Chapter 2 explains why I chose trees to be the theme, and discusses the appearance and the characteristics of trees, as well as the energy they provide for me. Chapter 3 presents the results of material study by examining the single painting “Those Times that Make Me Keep Going.” Chapter 4 discusses the mutual affection between human and the environment through the interpretation of the “Tree Series 1” and the “Tree Series 2.” In addition, this chapter also introduces another type of creation by analyzing the work of “Ah! Star!” The conclusion chapter summarizes each phase of my development and provides guidance for the readers to learn about me and my work.
