Street racing, while in Taiwan it appeared as a subject in academic literature only about twenty years ago, it has a history as long as that of the automobile, that is, over a century. Related studies in Taiwan were often limited to the perspective of law violation and behavior correction. This thesis therefore looks at street racing not as an isolated delinquency but rather relates it to broader social contexts. The analysis is based on three kinds of sources. Firstly a participatory observation that lasted 18 months allows a first hand experience. Secondly, a review of literature historically on the subject allows a diachronic understanding of street racing. Thirdly, theoretical concepts are employed to construct analytical framework which is called “the triple spiral of normality, pleasure and cultural industry”. The spiraled interaction among the three factors gives rise new forms of street racing. Cultural industry works to broaden the population participated as well as the public acceptability of the activities. Norm attracts deviance, not only because of the pleasure obtained from violating it, but also because norm as limitation calls for its transgression. Legal racing provides the mechanical and technical ground for a game of record breaking. The rebellious activities are thus transformed into a cultural industry. And thus along the changing conditions through time, the triple spiral would keep on spiraling.
