Variable and complicated lifestyle in modern society causes the product demand become compound. It also results in the needs of integrating and applying interdisciplinary knowledge in product development process. Nowadays, the outcome evaluation of applying interdisciplinary knowledge in the development process is discordant. This research confirms the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, agrees with adding society concern in industrial design, and claims the importance of cooperation between sociology and industrial design for social design. The reason of bad result from interdisciplinary cooperation may be caused by different thinking contexts which blocks in communication. Therefore, this research adds the sociology department members into a interdisciplinary design team to discuss product concept together. This method helps to identify the characteristics of thinking context that a interdisciplinary design team with sociology department members has. In addition, this study tries to figure out if there are more sociology viewpoints in the thinking context. The research results are expected to become a basic research methodology of society design for further studies in the future. The research assumption of this study is that there would be more thinking of relations between products and society in discussion content if there were sociology department members join into the design teams. This study applies Experimental Research Method. The experimental group is the design team which owns students of sociology and industrial design departments together. The control group is the design team with students from industrial design department only. In the experiment process, two groups develop concepts based on the social issue about “elder’s happiness” separately. Through analyzing the outputs of the experiment, this study obtains the characteristics of thinking contexts in interdisciplinary design teamsThis study concludes the thinking context features of the interdisciplinary design team which has sociology department members, and the features are as following1. The aspect of “Thinking Context”: The content of issues discussion from the interdisciplinary team is more profound but not with extensive contexts. In addition, due to non-design department members are not familiar with product development process, the ability of leading the discussion back to the main topic of industrial design department members is vital. Otherwise, it forms no avail communication.2. The aspect of “Thinking Viewpoint”: The interdisciplinary design team with psychology department members tends to explain human’s psychology and physiology status from sociology factors. However, the design team with single major background tends to understand one certain user group through personal physiology and psychology features. Therefore, it reveals that an interdisciplinary collaboration can break the fixed professional thinking context or frame and make the possibilities of problem solving become diverse.3. The aspect of “Interactive Communication”: The two different backgrounds’ members of interdisciplinary team have fine interaction and feedback in the aspects that are related to the profession of “physiology”, “psychology” and “users.” Among these aspects, the discussions come up with more practical meaning.Further related research in the future can apply this study as study basic to explore more interactive communication issues of concept collaboration from interdisciplinary design team continuously. It is expected to make design innovation paths become diverse and abundant. |
