The aim of this paper is to study the development of Catalyst Cafés in Taichung City. These cafes developed a specific way to organize space. It allows them to hold multiple activities in a flexible environment. They must integrate in the urban space as well as accommodate different communities. It is a new type of urban cafés. We visited and studied Catalyst Cafés in Taichung city. Taichung like other cities is multicultural. The development of information technologies dropped the old boundaries that were limiting the transmission of art and culture to the mass. In such an environment, cafés became an important living space for a generation. Some cafes managers developed new places that fit in this culture, that promote arts, activities and self development as the core concept of their businesses. These Cafés are like catalyst for interpersonal interaction through diverse activities. However, there are many different types of Catalyst Cafés . This study surveys all Catalyst Cafés in Taichung City. It classifies the cafes according to the activities they hold, the way they organize space and the way they are managed. We've found that there are three kinds of Catalyst Cafés: 1- Arty Catalyst Cafés, 2- Activity Catalyst Café, and 3- Societal Catalyst Café. These different types of activities reflect the personality of the owner/manager. They are at the center of these projects. They are very involved in their businesses, often in a personal way. This is the first reason for which these cafés are different and successful at creating interaction between people. They are inventing a new cafe culture. Recent changes in lifestyle and working habits affect the way people live and work in a city. Catalytic Cafés are an answer to these mutations. The different types of Catalytic Cafés attract different crowds. We can classify these crowds by social behaviors as: 1-The hotdesking community, 2- The community of outside living, 3- Modern Cocoons, 4-The activist community. This study reviews the communities that gather in Catalyst Cafés and interpret and analyze the different characteristics of each community. Next, it studies the communities move around, evolve and interact in this environment. At last, this paper examines how the space in such café's, their management of the activities and the community of users affect the city.
