In this thesis, we experimentally study that the plano-concave resonator configuration of diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser without any additional components can self Q switch and spontaneously generate giant pulses. Self-pulsation takes place when the cavity length is adjusted within a region close to the radius-of-curvature of the concave mirror as well as the cavity axis is misaligned with respect to the pump beam. In this way, giant pulses as short as 2.35 ns with a repetition rate of 9.84 kHz and highest peak power of 112.5 W are obtained at 1 W of pump power by using a concave mirror of 98% reflectivity and 10-mm radius of curvature.
