[City on Paper] is a topic regarding [the representation of the city], having to do with the city, as well as its re-presentation. As the city appears on paper, it will be related as closely as urbanology and the history of urbanism, this typology remains consistent with culture and social indicator. In spite of that, it evokes ideology caused by the influence of our existing knowledge and emotional experiences. My opinion is that “knowledge and construction” have complementary relationships to “experience and representation”. Therefore, [City on Paper] is in search of the “archive of design approach”. First introduced are [the representation of the city], using “Urban Painting” and “Urban Drawing” as the prologue to discussion. According to their contents, features, arguments and representations in talking about the urban visualization and space figuration. The next part is to interpret four case studies of [representative cities], included are two substantial cities and two virtual cities. In this chapter it connects and reveals the transition from “graphic origin” to “urban design” especially the “virtual cities”. It relates to the psychology, personal spirit and sensible ideology of the archive. Moreover, when it faces the [urban problems] (communal problems), it will approach another portion of the archive: treatment or tools of space management. The third chapter is focused on two dialogues about the beauty and function of city. Simulating the dialogue of John Ruskin to Camillo Sitte, Louis Sullivan to Ledoux, to let psychology and aesthetic become the meaningful spirit of urban design and function arrangement. Once the psychology function of the environment is en route to design, it will be easy for urban designers to reach the laymen. Besides, if the expression of aesthetic was the solution to function, the “form follows function” is not just the insistent requirement from designers themselves. To the community, the visual acceptance and response could be the channel for cultural construction. |
