This proposed experiment will be conducted to study the parental care, reproductive strategies and behavioral ecology of Chirixalus eiffingeri male frogs by field observation on the social interactions between male frogs with conspecifics and genetic analyses of the relationship between male frogs and fertilized eggs and tadpoles. The aim of the first year project is to study the synchronous polyandry and multiple paternity. In the second year, we will study the reproductive strategy of male frogs during the egg-guarding period. In the third year, we will study the breeding activity and reproductive strategy of male frogs in relation to the breeding site resources and mate availability. Our proposed experiments represent one of the few molecular studies on arboreal breeding anurans that exhibit paternal and maternal cares. By combining the field observation and genetic analyses, we will able to study the reproductive behavior of male frogs in great detail. The results of this study will have an important contribution in understanding the evolution of the mating system, parental care, diversity of reproductive strategies, and sexual selection of anuran species.
