DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
Brief History
The Department of Environmental Science was established in 1981, and launched a Master’s program in 1992. In 2005, the Department was renamed as the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering to encompass the academic curriculum and research activities, and to provide academic training for perspective students in the fields of both science and engineering with equal emphasis. The averaging enrollment in the Department during the last 10 years is 240 total undergraduate students and the graduate enrollment has averaged 30 students. In 2006, the Department will initiate a Ph.D. program to further the academic excellence and to meet the urgent needs, both domestically and globally, for environmental protection and pollution prevention. In brief, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering seeks to equip students with the necessary qualifications needed to succeed in this ever changing field.
Distinctive
The Department offers unique undergraduate education that not only emphasizes a strong theoretical foundation, but also practical experience. The broad range of curriculum includes natural and ecological conservation, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, environmental chemistry and analysis, as well as environmental policy, planning and management. Undergraduate students also have opportunities for internships, co-op programs, and practical training experiences which provide a stepping stone to professional careers. The curriculum has tremendously served its purpose, as the alumni of the Department have historically performed well whether they chose to pursue advanced degrees or profession careers.
The Department also has active research programs which attract strong yearly research funding from government and industry sectors. The training of graduate students, with a requirement of thesis, through assisting research and funded projects prepares students with critical thinking and independent capability – ingredients necessary to enhance their careers.
Future and Outlook
Through actively participating independent and cooperative research projects with government agencies and private corporations, the department Faculty has strengthened both research and teaching quality in the past 10 years. Since moving to the new building in 2002, the department has experienced a rapid expansion in research and teaching equipment, instruments, as well as new faculty members.
In the near future, the Department will continue to expand its faculty, and remain active in cooperative projects with government agencies, local and foreign public and private enterprises, as well as other research institutions. Meanwhile, the faculty and staff, of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering will strive to provide the undergraduate and graduate students with top-shelf educational experience.
