Introduction:

• 民國60年，美籍傳教士羅芳華博士，聘請國內外菁英，胼手胝足，創立了當時國內首屈一指的音樂學系，培育人材無數。



• 民國77年，郭宗愷博士接任系主任，更努力擴充師資、設備，成立管絃樂團及音樂研究所。



• 民國84年，徐以琳博士接掌系主任及研究所所長，本著培育具實力之演奏、演唱及作曲者的宗旨，以健全的教育體制使學生發揮個人音樂潛能，並致力於促進國際音樂及學術交流。



• 民國86年，馬邁克博士接任系主任，在加強軟、硬體設備及現代化教學上，努力不懈，並成立音樂系基金。



• 民國88年，羅芳華博士再度接掌系主任及研究所所長，並致力於籌募經費以興建新系館，期使藝術的創作與傳承，能在系統化、專業化的環境中順利茁壯。



• 民國93年，陳思照副教授接掌系主任，持續催生新系館及演奏廳，帶領音樂系師生走出校園、進入社區，推廣音樂文化。



• 民國96年，徐以琳再度接任系主任，順利完成音樂系搬遷工程，充實設備；並成立國內第一所音樂先修班，以大學音樂系資源培養更多青少年音樂家。

• The Department of Music was established in 1971 by Dr. Juanelva Rose, an American missionary. From the beginning the curriculum was modeled after some of the more outstanding schools of music in the United States. Class sizes were deliberately kept small. In addition to high standards of musical performance, emphasis has always been placed on a solid foundation in music theory and music history. Tunghai was the first institution in Taiwan to set such high standards for graduation with a degree in musical performance.


In order to further nurture local musical talent, in 1992 a Master of Arts degree program was added under the leadership of Dr. Tzong-kai Kuo. The same high standards found in the undergraduate program can be seen in the graduate program as well.

There are now well over a thousand graduates of the department who have established themselves as competent musicians, both in Taiwan and on the international musical stage.

The department currently has fifteen full-time and 56 part-time faculty members. In addition to to Taiwanese faculty, there are also professors from the United States, Japan and Belarus.

Current enrolment is approximately 200 students, including Chinese from other countries and other international students. Most of the textbooks used by students are in English. There are six major performing groups: orchestra, wind ensemble, mixed chorus, opera workshop, Electone ensemble and percussion ensemble. Each semester there are public performances at various venues around the island.

For the last twenty-five years, Tunghai has sponsored a summer music festival, inviting internationally acclaimed artists to teach and perform in the school’s facilities. In the last few years the department has also hosted an international music symposium, inviting scholars from abroad to share their research findings.

In the last year, the music department established the Tunghai University Preparatory School of Music program to help nurture young talent. There are currently students ranging in age from third graders up to university level enrolled in this program.

The Tunghai University Department of Music is without a doubt an important center for the study of western art music in central Taiwan.
