Effects of Virtual Literature Circles on University Students’ Reading Attitudes and Reading Comprehension in EFL contextChiu-Wen Amanda HuangAdvisor: Dr. Min-Hsun ChiangABSTRACT Due to the decline in reading interest or attitude and the importance of reading ability, reading experts and teachers have sought various strategies to cultivate students’ reading attitudes and ability. Among these strategies, the idea of literature circles initiated by Daniel (1994) has been recognized as a conductive way to promote students’ reading attitudes and improve reading comprehension. With the rise of instructional technology, virtual literature circles (VLC) were developed as an innovative version of literature circle to further enhance students’ language learning. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effects of incorporating virtual literature circles into EFL freshmen’s English classes on participants’ reading attitudes and proficiency. In addition, this study also focuses on how EFL freshmen make sense of their participation in virtual literature circle. A total of 54 students from two freshmen English for non-majors (FENM) classes of Tunghai University will participate in this study. The virtual literature circle was integrated into the regular FENM classes. Students were instructed to engage in virtual literature circles through a series of tutorial sessions. Data were gathered from multiple sources in terms of a reading attitude survey, Tunghai English Placement Exam (TEPE), and an open-ended questionnaire. With regard to the quantitative methods, the results of pre-and post-tests on the reading attitude (via a survey) and reading proficiency (via TEPE) of the participants were analyzed by using SPSS in order to obtain the descriptive and inferential statistical results. As for the qualitative, students’ responses to the open-ended questionnaire regarding their perception of participation in virtual literature circles were also examined and coded for the advantages and disadvantages of partaking in virtual literature circles. The major findings of the study were summarized as follows. First, the quantitative results of a reading attitude survey reveal no significant difference in the improvement of one’s reading attitude. However, qualitative data indicated that a majority of the participants agreed that participating in virtual literature circles did stimulate their reading time and interest. Second, on the basis of the results of TEPE and students’ perception afterwards, it can be supported that participating in virtual literature circles did result in progress in reading ability. Third, there existed a significant correlation between the improvement of reading interest and the progress of reading ability. Fourth, the participants of this study held a positive attitude toward the incorporation of virtual literature circle into regular English class and recognized the effectiveness of participating in virtual literature circles.Key words: literature circles, virtual literature circles, reading attitude, and reading proficiency
