This paper discusses my gouache works during my graduate studies (2011-2014), including the Model series, which probes into China contemporary art, and the Bigheadedness series, which adopts selfies (self-portrait photographs often seen on the Internet) as its subject. Both series focus on the theme of modularization, responding to current lack of subjects for critical thinking in Taiwan's gouache works. Factors that result in such lack. as well as other problems faced during the creation of my work, are also discussed in this thesis. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 explains the motive and purpose of this research and defines its subject and scope by introducing the basic framework and clarifying the terms used in this paper such as "modularization", "China contemporary art" and "self-portrait photos". Chapter 2 and 3 discuss my Model series and Bigheadedness series respectively. The discussions begin with literature review, examining the context where modularization takes place; the last sections in both chapters describe the form, techniques and creative process of the two series and make clear the questions raised in the works. Chapter 4 provides responses and reflections to these questions using examples from various artists. The last section proposes some methods artists could adopt when choosing gouache as their medium to deal with issues and hypothesizes the character of this medium. Chapter 5 concludes the discussions in previous chapters and my experience and thoughts in terms of gouache painting.
