The inner world of people with Asperger’s Syndrome is regarded as obscure and incomprehensible by the general public. In her book, Mindblind, Jennifer Roy reveals this hardly understood world through the voice of a fourteen-year-old boy, Nathaniel, who describes how Asperger’s Syndrome has led him to be considered different from others and how and to what extent it has impacted his life and others’ with surprises and challenges. This thesis seeks to understand how Nathaniel is situated and stigmatized in society in terms of his differences. Derrida’s “différance” is used to explain how individuals with special needs such as ASD are regarded as “abnormal” in relation to those “normal” ones and whether these labels or categories can represent who these individuals truly are. Although Nathaniel seems to be content with his status quo, it is argued that he aspires to be identified and included by others.Along with the analysis of domestic issues among Nathaniel and his family members, this thesis suggests that being a teenager also puts trouble and confusion on his mind, such as looking for love and friendship, as much as how it affects ordinary teenagers. The process of struggling and dealing with these issues shows how he grows up by learning social skills, managing social rules, and accommodating himself to social values of the mainstream. On the one hand, Nathaniel’s academic achievements and circle of friends show his agency and efforts in social participation; on the other hand, it also implies his compromise to the societal norms. While the transformation of Nathaniel can be identified in the story, his father’s resistant attitude to understanding his son’s situation continues to upset Nathaniel. Focusing on Nathanial’s interaction with others, the thesis examines how he has made a difference to other people’s lives, which is later reciprocated in the development of his own well-being. |
